Startup Everbloom has developed renoa, a new alternative clothing fiber crafted from protein waste sources including cashmere scraps, wool remnants, and feather down.
The US Federal Trade Commission recently approved it as the first new fiber classification in 25 years.
A comforter is filled, a quilt is filled thinly, and a duvet cover has no fill at all. It is one layer of cloth with an opening, and the filled part slides inside it. The working rule: if it has fill and you cannot wash it, it wants a cover. If it has no fill, it probably is one.

A 2022 study in the Journal of Natural Fibers compared plain, twill and satin weaves in the same cotton. Air and water vapor permeability rose from plain to twill to satin while thermal resistance fell. A sateen flat sheet on its own is a cooler layer for a warm night than the reputation suggests.

"Bangladesh garment factory workers bear the brunt of rising temperatures"
Greenwashing is rife in fashion, but some brands are driving real change.
Patagonia repaired 174k+ items in 2025 and cut PFAS, Nudie Jeans fixed 66k+ pairs via lifetime repairs, PUMA made 9M+ garments via textile recycling, and Zara partnered with Circ to recycle poly-cotton blends.
But true credibility will require structural shifts in sourcing, chemistry, and repair networks, not just marketing campaigns.
I had some carrageenan gel that hadnt spoiled,so I decided to do a batch of fabric marbling instead of tossing it. More stable tray set-up, better paint control. My next gel batch will have the water softener component, thats arriving with this evenings mail. I hope that allows me to mix a thicker gel.

BURRY PORT: Designers artwork made from her studio floor scraps picked for Londons Discerning Eye show
A designers artwork, made from scraps off her studio floor, has been picked for The Discerning Eye exhibition at Londons Mall Galleries.
Tammy Danielle Davies textile piece, Threads, was inspired by a picture of a textile dump in Ghana.
She says she feels honoured to have a textile piece chosen for the show. Its very flattering, she said.
Tammy Danielle Davies made Threads from studio scraps after seeing a textile dump in Ghana
The picture showed waste that she says comes mainly from western countries. Just because weve moved the problem somewhere else, that doesnt mean it doesnt exist, she said.
The threads in the piece are scraps from her studio floor, stitched across three wooden embroidery hoops that she found in a scrap store.

From a fashion degree at Carmarthen School of Art to a Masters at Swansea College of Art
Tammy, a disabled designer, graduated from with a degree in fashion design in 2025.
She has just started a Masters at UWTSDs .
Tammy Danielle Davies (Image: Tammy Danielle Davies)Moving from clothes into textile art did not feel like a big leap to her. I think there is a perception that designing and making garments isnt artistic, but if you have a story to tell, it doesnt matter what medium you use, as long as you tell it with honesty and integrity, she said.
Hugh Bonneville among the six Discerning Eye selectors at the Mall Galleries
The show was chosen by six independent selectors, among them actor Hugh Bonneville and portrait artist Kelvin Okafor.
The others are artist and scientist Jasmine Pradissitto, art lawyer and collector Jon Sharples, culture journalist Martin Robinson and Financial Times art market columnist Mel Gerlis.
The organisers say more than 6,800 entries came in, and more than 750 works by more than 550 artists were shortlisted. They take in painting, drawing, sculpture, print, photography, video, textiles and ceramics.
The exhibition is free to visit, from 10am to 5pm every day, from Friday 13 to Saturday 21 November. It stays online until 1 January 2027.

For comparison: the first photo shows them in the order I posted them. The second shows them in (more or less) order of thickness: 512, 517, 516, 515, 513, D, S.
The last one shows off how much room I made in my yarn cabinet! I finished off 3 cones+3 tubes of yarn. I still have some of the red and brown, but I completely finished off the dusty pink, pale pink and 2 brands of white, except for those little scraps! Woot!
Woot!

Also not numbered, this is the single plain diagonal.
This is the most wacky of the lot and totally not practical, but if you like your tea towels more like an art piece, than this draft is for you! Shrinkage was 45% in width and 32% in length.
7/
This is the double plain diagonal tie-down. Strickler did not give it a draft number. It is most similar to 513, but the cells are deeper and the resulting fabric is deeper. We are also getting more shrinkage here. Shrinkage was 39% in width and 31% in length. This would have been the perfect time to figure out how to double weave hems to reduce the flare.
6/
515-Visually, this is very different from the previous ones. The white weft really dominates the look and the warp stripes are much less noticeable.
This one used all 16 of my treadles.
Shrinkage was 28% in width and 25% in length.
5/
517-Like 516, this draft called for 2 adjacent threads in shaft one. Shrinkage was 26% in width and 19% in length.
4/
516-This one ended up looking and feeling more like seersucker. One thing to note is that in the draft, Strickler calls for 2 adjacent threads on shaft 1. Since my shaft 1 (red) threads were thicker than the pinks and white, I just went with that. (the brown thicker too in case you were wondering). Shrinkage was 28% in width and 25% in length.
3/
513-The cells got quite deep on this one. The floats at the edge of the cells are long and will probably catch with use, but this will still make a great dish towel. Shrinkage was 30% in width and 26% in length.
2/
Here's a littleof before/after photos of the waffle weave project. All drafts come from Strickler's 8-shaft pattern book, so the numbers of the drafts refers to that.
The first is 512. The depth of the cells was among the smallest of the bunch after washing. I love how the cells in the front look like little rose buds and on the back they look like mums or some other larger flower. Shrinkage was 26% in width and 21% in length.
