What's prompting my visit this week: the gorgeous images of clothing and palatial decor in the "A La Luz De La ," which caught my eye at my town the other day.

It looks like the book was published in connection with a temporary exhibition at the Museo a while back: you can see a video here.

I'm thinking initially about just uploading designs to sites like Spoonflower and Redbubble (because it looks easiest and I have very few spoons) but I'm also curious about designers who have their own websites. Do you have to have stock on hand and process orders yourself, or are there print-on-demand companies that handle that side while letting you have your own website

Curious about making my own fabric and other textile and home decor designs to sell (eg via Spoonflower) and wondering if anyone has any experience they'd like to share.

Midway through new weaving. Titled "Crete".

'Today we unveil Crafted in Mexico, a new hub on Google Arts & Culture celebrating our nation's textile artisans, their enduring skills passed down through generations, and the significance of their work in the past, present and future.... The project presents over 50 stories that pay tribute to these artisans, their intricate techniques, and the enduring artistry that enriches Mexico's cultural heritage.'

These are no ordinary jeans. Aldersey-Williams, 51, a Merseyside-based textiles teacher, grew them herself. The process which nearly broke her took three years and 600 hours of labour, from sowing and growing the flax and woad (for linen and natural indigo dye) to dew retting (or rotting) the flax to reveal the linen fibres to breaking, scutching and hackling it (that is, prepping it for spinning) to spinning almost five kilometres of thread to weaving, cutting and sewing it all together.

Interesting story from the AFR today on flax / woad jeans, an idea conceived and executed by Justine Aldersey-Williams a textile lecturer and Mersyside practitioner.

We had our first ice storm and Im getting into the winter spirit by knitting a Flax sweater by Tin Can Knits (free pattern). Im using their (free) app to do it. Recommend! It sorts out the stitch counts based on size and yarn weight. Only has a few patterns available currently but they seem to be updating regularly. Great idea for an app, imo.

Magorzata Mirga-Tas produces wonderful works of portraiture from recycled (sometimes given by the subjects themselves)... her work was exhibited in 2022 in the Polish PavIilion of the Venice Biennalle.

Reminder for my -- the Archaeological Textiles Review (formerly Archaeological Textiles Newsletter) has been a fount of recent scholarship on old textiles for decades. They also report on experimental archaeology efforts and museum textiles.

If you can spare them a few bucks to help them maintain their website, that would be awesome.
