Buckwheat hulls compress and shift with pressure but do not spring back on their own because they are agricultural fiber, not foam. They interlock once redistributed through kneading, which is why hand-fluffing restores height in a buckwheat pillow while a dryer cycle does nothing useful for hulls that were never built for tumble heat.

GSM measures grams of fill per square meter of shell. That rate stays the same whether you order Twin or King. A 350 GSM duvet puts 350 grams in every square meter of fabric, so a King weighs more than a Twin because it covers more area, not because the fill got denser.
Total fill weight scales with size. The per-square-meter figure does not.

About a year ago I found this unused Early's Witney "point" trade blanket on eBay. The first blanket I bought in the '80s & made a capote out of it. The second & third are used for bedding. I grabbed this one because Early's, the last woolen mill in Whitney, England, closed in 2002, ending 300yrs of the regions blanket production. Kapok clumps permanently if it gets wet. Wool felts. Neither can be machine washed or dry cleaned. A protector becomes the only hygiene layer you can actually wash, since the fill underneath has no safe wash cycle to fall back on.
Sleep Foundation recommends washing a protector weekly. The pillow itself only needs washing about twice a year.
