Definition of Astrakhan

Fibre: Wool. Sometimes made with a mohair warp to add lustre and curl to the surface. Poor grades often have cotton warp or back. Fur: Luxuriant fur, curly and wavy. Most popular shade is brown. It is a caracul lambskin form the Astrakhan section of Russia.

Weave: Good grades woven with a pile weave and cut. Cheap grades are knitted.

Characteristics: Resembles astrakhan fur. Deep pile with curled loops. Durable and warm.

Uses: Coats, cloaks, trimmings and accessories.
